I've been wanting to write this post for some time now. We've jumped over hurdles, back flipped through hoops and stood very very patiently whilst all the paperwork, licences and approvals have been confirmed - and at last, we're ready to release our beers to the world.
My name's Paul and I'm the founder and brewer at Beatnikz Republic Brewing Co. Having brewed at home for a number of years, the idea to turn a passion into a profession came in the summer of 2013 and I've been working to this point ever since. Reading seminal brewing books (Mosher, Daniels & Steele especially); taking respected brewing courses (Brewlab); creating and refining recipes; sourcing quality suppliers; creating a brand identity from scratch, and - of course - tasting some of the greatest beers available in the world... these are the things that really get the blood racing! And so, to take a great man's advice, it's probably worth doing.
Our principle aim is simple: to make very flavoursome beers. If it is an interesting idea or concept, or contains unique brewing techniques or ingredients, then all the better - but never at the expense of flavour. Our favourite breweries are dedicated to the craft of creating beers with so much character that they're impossible to forget. Our aim is to create unforgettable beer.
We plan to write here frequently to give an insight into the behind-the-scenes goings on of the brewing company and to be as transparent as possible. I say brewing company as that is exactly what we are. We brew on other people's kit, whether that's in London (where we're based and the company is registered) or in other parts of the country, we go where the free capacity allows us to go and have no real desire to create a physical brewery of our own. This may fly in the face of what others are doing at the moment, but we're happy to 'cuckoo', 'gypsy' or 'contract' brew (as it's been labelled by others). We're happiest when coming up with concepts for beers, building recipes and tasting as we go - so that's what we're concentrating on. Having the freedom to work with some seriously experienced brewers, who also know their kit inside out, is greatly appealing too... especially when it comes to marrying innovation with quality.
The name 'Beatnikz Republic' came from two sources: 1) admiration of the US Beat movement of the 50s and 60s. The writers and artists that rejected the standard norms of the time is a perfect analogy for the beer revolution that took place in the US in the 80s that has continued to inspire to this day. I remember tasting IPA after IPA after IPA in the East Village & Greenwich in New York; this pretty much laid the foundations for what I'm doing today. The name is a homage to this inspiration. 2) the 'Republic' part is very simple - we love the democratic aspect of beer. The most expensive wine, whisky or brandy is financially out of reach for many, whilst (apart from a couple of rare examples) the best beer is an affordable luxury. We also think that beer, in all it's many shapes and sizes, should be ruled by the many and not by the few.
We take great pride in our labels, artwork and illustrations, and try to match the quality of the beer inside the bottle with the quality of the design on the outside. Many many hours are spent creating these designs and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Beer should be a full sensory experience and we want to combine the aroma and flavour of the beer with the visual design element.
So, in a nutshell, that's us! As mentioned, we plan to write here every couple of weeks to keep you informed on developments and we hope you get the chance to try (and enjoy) some of our beers.
Thanks for reading,
Paul Greetham | Founder & Brewer | Beatnikz Republic Brewing Co.
